Master Chocolate Review

Tucked away on a long stretch of road where a mini mall nestles quietly there is a store where a chocoholic’s dream is made into a reality.  This is Calgary-created chocolaterie “Master Chocolat.”  Founded by the father of chocolate himself, Bernard Callebaut who only uses the finest chocolate and ingredient to produce not just a delectable treat but an experience that you do not want to end any time soon.   I know this is a slight deviation from a normal restaurant, but this place deserves a special mention.

The Master of Chocolate is right here!

Atmosphere

You walk in and are greeted with clean modern architecture, but you get surprised by the touches of colourful bohemian that is spotted everywhere in the store.  The pristine white walls and equally white counter are the first thing you see but when you really look around there are a rainbow of options to behold.  It is clear that the product is the star of this store.  All of the Master Chocolat creations are on display and just waiting for a person to gaze upon all its glory.  But just in case you are confused and don’t quite get the décor you can see some bright coloured exotic printed throw pillows on a built-in bench.  It feels like you stepped into a whole new world.

A mixture of Boho and Mod!

Service

Quick and friendly service is what everyone hopes for.  The person working behind the counter delivered that and so much more.  They knew exactly what the sales, deals, and the ingredients are in every bonbon.  If you have questions, they have answers, and the best part is a couple of free samples.  That is the perfect way to bring people to your product and just love it!

Food

One word:  Chocolate.  What more can I say?  It would be hard to screw that up, but you never know.  This place does not screw this up.  I have tried a caramel ginger bonbon that brings spice and sweet together beautifully, the masterpiece that is the Dom Perignon champagne strawberry truffle that defies all labels, and carrot cake that actually tastes like carrot cake (making shocked face!).  Just for this I will be back often.  This is not a chocolate shop that you want to pass up.  You will be very sorry that you did.

Hot chocolate just like in the novel Chocolat!

Book

There is only one book that you need to bring with you when you are indulging in a hot chocolate while you are sitting and waiting for your box of bonbons.  That book is “Chocolat” written by Joanne Harris.  I know this isn’t what one would call a “trendy” book (it was in the day; just so you know) but it is still a favourite when it comes to the spring season or to those who admit that they are chocoholics.

Single mother Vianne Rocher and her daughter Anouk are just a couple of souls trying to find their place in the world.  Until then, they are happy to dispense these magical chocolates that wake up their tasters and make them feel alive again.  Of course this does not sit well with everyone (yeah!  I’m talking to you Reynold!) but slowly and surely, this mother and daughter duo win the hearts of the locals around them.  Just like our own Bernard Callebaut has won ours with his chocolate.

Final Thoughts/Ratings

10/10

I know this seems improbable, but I can find no fault in this store.  The chocolate is delicious, the owner unbelievably kind, and the whole ambience is nothing short of enchanting.  When you find a place this special, you should not just walk away.  In fact, you might want to find yourself buying not only their delicious chocolate bars but some hot chocolate to go that reminds you that no matter what is happening in the outside world, it is great when you have the best thing of it in your hands.  Thank you, Chef Callebaut, for making your masterpieces for the world to share.
